An interesting instruction by Lavrentiy Beria on the selection of personnel for work in the NKVD from the period 1938–1964, aimed at preventing degenerates and degenerates. Read the site and you will recognize many negative characters who have signs of degeneration. This instruction was in effect until 1964. And from 1967, when the 5th Directorate of the KGB was organized to combat believers and dissidents, they already began actively using degenerates, perverts, and homosexuals, for such people are easy to control — they won’t break off the hook.

This instruction is of a recommendatory nature when selecting personnel for admission to service in the NKVD of the USSR.

MAIN NEGATIVE CATEGORIES:

During the interview with a candidate, one should inquire about his marital status, living conditions and life of his parents. If they are divorced, it usually means that either the father or the mother is abnormal. Their children will also have divorces. It is a kind of seal of a curse that is passed down from generation to generation. If the parents lived happily, then their children will also be happy and mentally healthy.

Comrade I.V. Stalin determined that the Soviet family is a unit of society and, therefore, special attention should be paid to this.

When examining the family life of a candidate entering service, it is important to know as much as possible about his wife, what family she comes from, who her parents are. It would seem an elementary truth, but our personnel, as a rule, do not pay attention to this.

Pay close attention to large families. With degenerate mothers, it often happens that the more they sin, the more children they produce. This, in turn, is reflected in the children, and the worst is usually the last child.

Similar investigations should be conducted (covertly) regarding the remaining close relatives.

During the interview, find out about the friends and comrades who are part of the candidate’s constant social circle, according to the principle: “tell me who your friend is, and I’ll tell you who you are.” Pay attention to the candidate’s wife’s entourage. As a rule, this is a nest of vipers. Then the family life of the employee will entirely depend on the mood of the spouse, her girlfriends and connections.

MAIN VISIBLE SIGNS OF DEGENERATION (DEGENERACY):

Nervous tic or facial spasms. Usually concentrated around the mouth. The mouth, lips, nose, neck twitch. Eyelids twitch. This repeats every few minutes. Some try to hide it by stretching, neck warm-ups, etc.
Cross-eyedness and other eye deformities. It is not for nothing that it is said that the eyes are the mirror of the soul. This category of people with an “evil eye” should include not only the cross-eyed, but also: hunchbacks, dwarfs, unusually ugly people. This should also include different-colored eyes, up to astigmatism.

In the Middle Ages, for example, the Inquisition burned people at the stake for just one of the above-mentioned signs. And the Russian Tsar Peter the Great issued a decree forbidding redheads, cross-eyed, and hunchbacks from giving testimony in courts. These historical axioms must be applied in the daily practice of the NKVD.

All kinds of speech defects. Lisp, rhotacism (burr), stuttering. All this is closely related to nervous, hereditary mental illnesses.
Chronic migraines. Severe headaches up to nausea and vomiting. As a rule, this disease is hereditary. If any close relative suffers from it, then it is likely to have been inherited by the candidate entering service. Migraines should not be confused with ordinary headaches that every person gets. This refers to pains that plunge a person into a coma-like state from which he cannot emerge for a long time, even after medical intervention. One should find out whether any of the candidate’s close relatives suffer from such pains.
Horse teeth. These are teeth protruding forward, like a horse. This can be attributed to the category of deformities associated with the “evil eye”. Other signs indicating facial deformity: disproportion of head size in relation to the body, an unusually large head, a protruding forehead, etc. Any visible body disproportions that may seem repulsive.
Birthmarks. During a medical examination, large birthmarks should be detected, of black or reddish, dark yellow, brown color, and possibly other shades, which in the Middle Ages were officially called the seal of the devil or the mark of a witch. This should not be confused with ordinary small birthmarks that everyone has. The seal of the devil is usually larger than a cherry, the size of a plum up to the size of a plate or samovar. There are also such spots the size of a prune, covered with down. Of course, not all degenerates have these signs, but, as a rule, those who do have them are common degenerates.
Pay special attention to the national origin of the candidate. People who have originated from mixed marriages are very dangerous in social terms, due to their psychogenetic essence. For personnel selection in the NKVD, it is important to cut off, first of all, persons who have Jewish blood. Find out if there were Jews in the family. It is necessary to investigate the nationality of close relatives up to the fifth generation.
Suicides. It is important to know whether among close relatives there were those who committed suicide, regardless of the circumstances of the deceased’s life. Research shows that suicidal tendencies are a hereditary disease passed down from generation to generation. It does not necessarily have to be that everyone in the hereditary chain must end their life by suicide. But if it happened once, it will certainly repeat, even if several generations pass.

During a medical examination and psychophysiological assessment, signs of degeneration and degeneracy should be identified by examining them according to body systems and organs, based on comparative anatomy:

I. Body structure plan and form.

In cases of degeneration, the body plan and its weight may sometimes be disturbed. In a male sexual type the entire body may correspond to a female organism, and vice versa (feminism and masculism), mixing of sexes (hermaphroditism). Body dimensions and the proportion of parts, as well as symmetry of the two halves, may be disrupted. This is expressed in disturbances of size and proportion of parts. For example, six-fingeredness, fingers of different sizes on the hands. Sometimes the skin of one half of the body contains more warts or is more intensely pigmented, or is colored by a different pigment than the other half; or the iris of the eyes contains different pigments, i.e., the right eye does not resemble the left, etc. Or, finally, the union of the two halves of the body is incomplete, and such an arrest in its development can give forms known as WOLF’S MOUTH, HARE’S LIP. Incorrect arrangement of parts can manifest as a reversal in the position of internal organs. For example, the liver, normally lying on the right, is located on the left, and the heart, located on the left, is on the right. Small stature as a consequence of general underdevelopment (infantilism) should also be included here.

II. Limbs and body parts.

Formation of a tail appendage, extra limbs, or extra fingers on feet and hands (polydactyly). Multiple fingers — an anomaly in the structure of joints and bones. It is an exclusively hereditary disease. Multiple fingers may be fused, doubled ribs, vertebrae. Deficiency of carpal bones, fingers of hands, feet, as well as the entire skeleton of that same limb or body part.

III. General integuments:

a) Abnormal skin pigmentation. Various pigments, pigmentation or formation of sharply pigmented areas (different pigmentation of the skin of the shoulders, upper back or skin of the abdomen, thighs, etc.), or, as in animals, a mottled piebald skin coloring.

b) Abnormal hairiness of the body and face. Eyebrows grown together, presence of facial hair in a woman.

c) A significant number of small birthmarks on the skin or a small number of large ones.

d) Reversive signs. i.e., return phenomena indicating a return to natural traits characteristic of animals. Fingers fused together, like the swimming webbing of an amphibian’s foot, abnormal development of cutaneous and mammary glands. The presence of one or several mammary glands in men, an increase in the number of mammary glands and nipples, instead of one pair — several pairs.

IV. Head

abnormally large or small head size; irregular head shape according to four types:

plagocephalia — obliquity of the head;
oxycephalia — head narrowing upward, a consequence of early fusion of the coronal and sagittal sutures;
clinocephalia — saddle-shaped head;
scaphocephalia — boat-shaped head.

Signs of degeneration and degeneracy should include a lack of proportionality between the head and face, in other words, between the dimensions of the thinking and masticatory apparatuses.

Unusually large size of the face or lower jaw, protrusion of the lower jaw forward (prognathism). The shape of the nose has the same significance. Sharp

slanting of the nose, deepening of the root of the nose, nostrils opening not downward but outward or forward.

V. Organ of vision.

The following congenital anomalies are encountered in it (apart from congenital blindness):

albinism, abnormal protrusion of the central retinal artery, colomba iridis and choroideae, oval shape of the pupil with the long diameter directed toward the root of the nose (Legrian).

Of particular significance are irregularities in pigmentation of the iris in the form of sharply colored small accumulations of pigment instead of a uniform distribution over the iris. Often the color of this pigment does not correspond to the general color of the eyes, for example, clusters of yellow or brown pigment interspersed in a blue or green eye.

Congenital anomalies of the organs that move and protect the eye are quite often encountered: congenital strabismus, presence of a rudimentary third eyelid covering the eye on both sides from the nose — a reversive sign corresponding to the third eyelid of animals (amphibian’s eye).

All kinds of variations in the size of the eyeballs, in the thickness and shape of the eyebrows, which more often constitute an anthropological rather than a neuropathic peculiarity. But the relation of the distance between the eyes to the width of the eyelid fissure has pathological significance: a distance between the eyes

exceeding the length of the eyelid fissure is considered a sign of degeneration.

Organ of hearing. Excessive smallness of the ears, rudimentary or underdeveloped state of the ears, a sharply pronounced Darwin’s tubercle, sharpening or protrusion of the upper part of the ear — Satyr’s tubercle.

Morel’s ear (a simplified ear without folds and helices), sharp protruding of the ears from the head to an extent approaching a right angle.

Intestinal canal.

The oral opening in degenerates may be either very large or too small. The mouth opening should be considered small if it equals the palpebral fissure of the subject or approaches these dimensions.

Teeth represent one of the organs most subject to degenerative changes. In deep antiquity, the worth of a person was determined by the teeth.

Ancient physicians Aristotle and Galen explain changes in teeth as degeneration, as independent physiological signs of degeneration. Teeth may be in an incomplete number. Most often, two incisors are missing, instead of four.

Or, with a full number of incisors — two are of normal size, while the other two (usually the lateral ones) are narrow, underdeveloped, separated by significant gaps from neighboring teeth, which indicates underdevelopment of teeth with a normally developed jaw.

An underdeveloped jaw is also encountered, in which teeth fit with difficulty and come out of the natural boundaries of one curved cavity, retreat partly backward, partly forward, and the teeth are either not in full number or are improperly positioned.

Significant deviations from the norm are observed in the hard palate. It may be narrow, deepened, vaulted instead of flat, like a ceiling.

VIII. Urogenital apparatus.

In degenerates one finds: epispadias, hypospadias, abnormally small size of the sexual organ, underdevelopment of the testicles (anorchia), the presence of only one testicle (monorchia), hermaphroditism as an isolated symptom without other abnormal signs of sex.

In women: smallness of the mammary glands, underdevelopment, atresia of the vaginal canal, smallness, underdevelopment of the uterus, bicornuate uterus (a reversive sign).

IX. Circulatory system and internal organs (heart, lungs, liver, etc.).

In degenerates it often happens that the heart, circulatory system, as well as other important organs, are subject to abnormally enlarged sizes. This circumstance is an essential factor predisposing to diseases of various organs.

For example, with overly small kidneys or underdeveloped lungs, a burdensome vicarious work falls upon the skin and intestinal tract; the same happens with small arterial trunks. Relative smallness of the heart, narrowness of the arterial system, large size of the lungs with a small liver and short small intestines — yield one combination; while a large heart, spacious arterial system, large liver and considerable length of the large intestines with underdeveloped lungs yield the opposite combination. This entails morbid processes, which run a pernicious course and differ from each combination (Benecke).

X. Anomalies of body build.

One should keep in mind the frequent obesity in degenerates. A not uncommon certain degree of general and local edema, analogous or identical with myxedema, associated with hemorrhagic tendency linked to anatomical peculiarities of vascular structure. Thin, atrophic skin.

When discussing anatomical peculiarities, when deciding the question of what is pathological and can be classified as signs of degeneracy and degeneration, and what is merely a variant of anthropological features, one may be guided by the following signs, if they are present.

These examples consist of a statistical count of the frequency of the studied signs. For example, protruding ears among the healthy population amount to 15.5%, while in psychiatric hospitals they are 45–50%.

This circumstance shows that those with protruding ears have a greater chance of developing psychosis than subjects free from this sign. Consequently, this sign is an indicator of a hidden neuropathic predisposition.

The second distinguishing criterion is the reversive character of the sign under consideration, i.e., its belonging to phenomena long since passed in phylogenesis, for example, multiplicity of mammary glands in humans, general hairiness, and the like — signs more characteristic of animals than of man.

Thus, one should pay close attention to people whose bodies, both on the back and on the chest, have an abundant hair coat; if these candidates belong to the white race, then signs of degeneracy and degeneration are present. A different attitude should be taken toward people whose ethnic roots come from the Caucasus and Asia. In that case, the presence of a hairy coat on the body serves a protective function inherent to their place of origin.

The third guiding criterion in evaluating signs of degeneracy and degeneration is the multiplicity of stigmata of degeneration and their scattered distribution among different body systems: anomalies of the teeth, iris, skin, genital organs (meaning only the unusually small size of the genital organs in men — 2–3.5 cm in length of the penis, and underdevelopment of the genital organs in women, including absent or underdeveloped breasts) and so forth.

The fourth sign is the unquestionable incompleteness of a certain anatomical organ or part of it, for example: cleft palate, hare lip, retention of the testicles in the abdominal cavity, etc.

The fifth criterion is the parallelism of anatomical signs with physiological and psychological ones.

PHYSIOLOGICAL SIGNS OF DEGENERACY AND DEGENERATION

1. Functional asymmetry of the two halves of the body.

To this can be attributed the frequently observed unilateral sweating in degenerates — a phenomenon consisting in that sweating, occurring under the influence of emotional excitement, mental work, or sometimes under physical strain, takes place to a much greater extent on one side of the body or face than on the other.

At the same time, one side is abnormally sensitive in this respect and within the boundaries of such a difference strictly coincides with the midline of any part of the body (face, nose, forehead, etc.). Such unilaterality is also observed in trophic functions, for example, graying of the hair or pigmentation precisely coincide with the boundaries of different halves of the body or different segments of the trunk.

2. Predisposition to cerebral hyperemias and the resulting excitation of cerebral (especially mental) activity.

The basis of this morbid phenomenon lies in the abnormal excitability of the vasomotor apparatus in the center or periphery. Such a physiological peculiarity is observed in children and descendants of many mentally ill or degenerative subjects.

This is sharply expressed in the immediate generation of drunkards (alcoholics) and serves as a reflection of hereditary alteration of that very apparatus which is most sensitive to the toxic action of ethyl alcohol.

As pharmacology demonstrates, alcohol and ether, taken internally or introduced into the body by inhalation in degenerates, weaken their organism, while chloroform first of all affects (paralyzes) the vasomotors, and only then acts poisonously on other centers.

Thus, it should be assumed that alcohol consumption by normal people, whose parents were not subject to degeneracy and degeneration, including in large quantities, is characterized by the assimilability of alcohol and its processing by internal organs without subsequent abnormal phenomena in the behavior of the healthy subject (memory loss, hooliganism, debauchery, drunken importuning, etc. — all that is considered disgusting and abominable in sober people).

Degenerates and degenerates, after consuming a dose of alcohol, firstly, cannot stop, and secondly, having drunk themselves into a bestial state, lapse into aggressive behavior, act hooliganly, fail to account for their actions, and lose control of themselves.

Upon sobering up, they typically regret what happened and do not remember the sequence of events or their own actions.

Therefore, when undergoing an examination, it is advisable to ask about the quantities of alcohol a subject can consume and what happens in the event of an overdose.

The hereditary effect of alcohol is expressed in the fact that the vasomotor system in the descendants of alcoholics is morbidly excitable to all kinds of stimuli, as if the vascular paralysis acquired by the alcoholic during their lifetime has been passed on in full to the descendants as an innate physiological deficiency.

Thus, in this example of alcoholic heredity, one should see the genetic link of phenomena. The course of morbid transmission and the functional degeneration caused by it can be traced.

Therefore, the task of the medical examination during the commission’s review is the IDENTIFICATION of close relatives suffering from chronic alcoholism among candidates.

The conscription of such candidates is, naturally, impermissible.

One should bear in mind that vasomotor excitability, acquired by one means or another, organically changes a person’s character, making them irritable and prone to emotional disturbances: in a physiological sense, this cause easily induces cerebral hyperemia and delirium in all kinds of infectious diseases — a circumstance long known to medicine.

3. Inability to control certain complex reflex acts that are normally well-subordinated to the will.

For example, nocturnal enuresis, which, according to unpublished research, can be classified among the physiological signs of degeneration and degeneracy.

It occurs far more often in those individuals who also exhibit other indisputable signs of degeneration.

Nocturnal enuresis should be regarded as a consequence of a special sensitivity of the bladder’s mucous membrane (increased reflex excitability) or as an expression of weakness in the inhibitory influence from the cranial-cerebral centers.

Such bladder sensitivity is sometimes observed during emotional disturbances (e.g., during anticipation) and represents, in all likelihood, a cortical phenomenon of a dynamogenic or, conversely, inhibitory nature.

This category of phenomena includes the observed occurrence of nausea and vomiting from anticipation. Also included here are uncontrollable blushing and the fear of blushing.

4. Idiosyncrasy. These are physiological peculiarities by virtue of which certain subjects perceive the action of agents capable of exciting their organs or nerve centers in a completely exclusive or uniquely intrinsic manner.

By virtue of such a capacity, such subjects either prove insensitive to certain agents or, conversely, display excessive sensitivity to the slightest excitations of a particular kind (to food substances, medications, etc.).

The physiological peculiarity described is based on the greatest, exceeding all norms, excitability of some nerve center or some function.

The above-mentioned example of excitability of the general vasomotor center in the descendants of drunkards represents a specific case of idiosyncrasy, limited to a single nervous apparatus.

Experience shows that idiosyncrasies are numerous, relate to many organs and nerve centers, and can be provoked by many external agents (medications and other influences, for example, riding on a sleigh, the sight of snow, etc.).

5. Speech impediments.

Certain speech impediments bear the characteristic imprint of the signs of degeneration. This includes such morbid speech defects as stuttering, lisping, and rhotacism (burring).

Stuttering should not be classified as a degenerative sign if it is not an innate, but an acquired feature. For example, a small child was frightened by something (vicious dogs, wolves, etc.), and began to stutter; whereas before this, they spoke normally.

The morbid nature of these phenomena stems from the fact that these defects (with the exception of stuttering) are very difficult to treat. They are often ineradicable, and this is all the more striking because some of the articulate sounds difficult for the subject are accessible to them in certain combinations of sounds and completely inaccessible in others.

Pronunciation defects are one of the most characteristic features of degenerative illnesses, akin to idiocy; thus the nature and significance of speech defects are thereby clarified.

6. Finally, some general biological features that distinguish degenerative families and lineages from healthy ones can be classified as physiological (functional) signs of degeneration:

a) A greater number of childless marriages than in healthy ones, in a proportion of 7:1.

b) The numerousness of the direct degenerative offspring.

c) Greater child mortality. Viability decreases with each generation.

d) The number of criminals emerging from their milieu is greater than from the milieu of healthy families.

MENTAL SIGNS OF DEGENERATION AND DEGENERACY

1. Psychic qualities: in hermaphroditism, feminism, masculism, infantilism, and senilism.

Hermaphroditism is the combination in one individual of two different sexes or only some of their properties.

Feminism is the arrest of male development in adolescence, which imparts certain feminine properties to the spiritual constitution. In feminism, deeper changes are also observed, dependent on the presence of certain third appendages in the male’s organism (female breasts, a wide pelvis, thickened shins, and so forth) and many psychic properties of a woman.

Infantilism is the arrest in a youth or maiden of physical development in all respects, but chiefly concerning sexual characteristics (uterus, ovaries, breasts — in females, and external genitalia and testicles — in males), and the slowing of hair growth on the genital parts.

Сенилизм — premature (early) mental and physical aging with progressive decline, appearance of senile, wrinkled skin and properties of the senile soul.

In all the listed conditions, psychic qualities for the most part go hand in hand with physical ones. For illustration we will limit ourselves to a few examples. Some masculine girls joined the ranks of men, entered the army, lived and took refuge in men’s monasteries. They not only did not reveal their true sex, but also in a mental sense displayed typical masculine properties.

In turn, traits of feminine character in effeminate men are also not rare. Such men like dark and colorful costumes, feminine pursuits (needlework) and excel at them. In childhood, effeminates liked to dress in women’s clothes, to use colors typical of the female toilette.

From these properties observed in effeminate men, it is necessary to distinguish those phenomena seen in weak-willed young men, when they instinctively strive to please women and display slavish imitation.

In turn, from masculinism should be separated the manifestations of those young females when, out of motives of imitativeness, they clothe their soul in typical masculine traits.

In both cases, recognition is based on the existence or absence of physical signs of the described condition and on the short duration and temporary nature of these phenomena characteristic of imitative forms. Therefore, one should closely and seriously regard effeminate men, as well as masculine-like women.

2. Mimicry and Physiognomy as Signs of Degeneration and Degeneracy.

Numerous scientific testimonies from deep antiquity — since the times of Aristotle and Adamantius — have established with certainty the fact that mimicry and physiognomy can appear as parts or partial manifestations of complex symptoms of degeneracy.

Aristotle did not fear the risk, venturing to determine bad character and bad moral traits in his contemporaries on the basis of mimicry. They pointed out thereby such traits that were constant, not temporary symptoms.

Numerous authors of the Middle Ages and modern times point out, alongside physical signs of degeneracy (birthmarks, warts, pigmented growths and so on), irregularity of mimicry — which has already been mentioned above. The very fact leaves no doubts about degeneration.

3. Sexual Anomalies.

They belong to the most characteristic signs of degeneracy. They present themselves either in the form of neurasthenic sensations, or as countless anomalies, information about which is gathered within the framework of forensic medicine and forensic psychology. The extreme expression is necrophilia. The relative portion of these psychic anomalies in degenerates confirms their pathological nature.

The most frequent and known since remote times anomalies are: erotomania or senilism in men, nymphomania in women, as well as perversions known by the name of pederasty (mainly in its passive form), sodomy, necrophilia (physical love for corpses), zoophilia (sexual attraction to animals) and so on.

4. Obsessiones or phobias, that is, obsessive and compulsive psychic states (thoughts and feelings, volitional acts), belong to the number of the most indisputable pathognomonic signs of degeneration.

These states currently have a rich literature and are well studied. An example of obsessive thoughts can be the thought that a certain object (a pin, an insect, etc.) has been swallowed, although at the same time the subject clearly realizes that this was not at all the case. Likewise, thoughts about possible infection, about touching something unclean requiring hand washing, or the thought that a sealed envelope prepared for sending contains an indecent expression. Disgusting, repulsive thoughts arise at the sight of a deceased person, portraits, etc.

To obsessive feelings belongs the fear of blushing in the company of others. An insurmountable feeling of shame, embarrassment, and guilt in the presence of others. An example of compulsive and obsessive actions can be constant hand washing at the thought of infection. Similarly, checking a letter for supposedly used indecent expressions. Or crossing from the right side of the street to the left according to the omen that the path on the right threatens the father, on the left — the mother.

5. Demonic Traits. Personified Evil.

More inherent to the works of poets. Signs manifest from an early age on an increasing scale, where the process of degeneracy becomes quite evident:

а) In regard to the intellect.

Intellectual powers usually constitute the only strong side of a person’s spiritual inheritance, by means of which the subject resolves for himself all life’s questions, and even those which are hardly accessible to intellectual analysis, and which are ordinarily resolved in normal people with the participation of feeling — as a more subtle instrument — morality, duty, conscience, and so forth.

The main features of the intellect of demonic natures are: loquacity, a tendency to argument, to sophisms and dialectics, dry logic and mental formalism, attempting to place itself above conscience, feelings, and hints of moral tact. Further — a striving to displace the logic of facts, to replace it with the logic of intellectual moods.

б) In regard to feelings — in the foreground there always stands a highly developed sense of anger and an organic elemental irascibility, which often reaches the proportions of a passion and therefore is with difficulty brought under control. The feeling of anger thus becomes an ineradicable, constantly smoldering trait of character, which imparts a fateful stamp to the entire psychic state. Very easily passes into spite, vindictiveness, vengefulness.

Many higher feelings — kindness, love, tender affection, hope for a better future, faith in people and goodness — are not fully developed and never reach the height of ideality. Because of this, subjects are pessimistic, distrustful, dry.

There is a tendency toward a gradual strengthening of the personal principle, personal interests, struggle, and enmity, for which the aggressive feeling of anger and wrath serves as a ready executive instrument. Such moral color blindness leads degenerates to fatal consequences. It intensifies their personal feelings, pride, and self-conceit, which leads to personal overestimation, disrespect, and contempt for people.

Pride in degenerates is as deep a character trait as anger. It cultivates in the subject an extreme — noli me tangere. With such pathological character traits, integration with people in family and society is no easy matter: any objection appears to a degenerate as an attack on him, and any disagreement — as an insult and an offense.

For degenerates, the ideal and the social are incomprehensible; only the personal is understandable. Thus, degenerates are devoid of social shame and these important moral correctives of life. In their actions, they are guided by a weak personal conscience, which is easily eclipsed by passions, especially anger.

Due to the aforementioned basic character traits, further life, starting from a young age, is directed along such a moral channel that leads not to improvement, but to decline and degeneration. Degenerates more or less separate themselves from people and, falling into moral solitude, continue to shun people and remain in a cold, self-created confinement.

Such living conditions lead to gloom and doubts. Doubt is the result of a conviction that emerges over time about the insolubility of many questions of life and the moral mental state — the chief weapon with which the degenerate is endowed by nature from birth, that is, the mind.

d) Regarding the will.

Internal disharmony, combined with a weak development of moral life, makes it impossible for the degenerate both to improve individually and to attain the higher goals of life.

Therefore, over time, the degenerate’s moral life moves not forward, as it should, but backward. This naturally leads to disillusionment, loss of joy in life, moral decrepitude, and such a moral metamorphosis occurs on a larger scale the weaker these feelings are developed. The entire plan of life disintegrates.

Life turns into a moral accident. The degenerate inevitably arrives at such a condition, which later entails suicide, characteristic of degenerates in general.

Attention should be paid to the contraction of the upper orbital muscle (the muscle of thought and mind) combined with a sharp contraction of the pyramidal muscle of the nose (anger, hostility) and a more or less noticeable contraction of the large zygomatic muscle (joy). The simultaneous contraction of the last two muscles expresses schadenfreude.

Thus, cold intellect, malice, schadenfreude, heartlessness — these are equally inherent in the demonic nature of degeneration.

In conclusion, attention should be drawn to the fact that the process of degeneracy and degeneration with its stages, manifestations, directions, and outcomes can very often be traced not only psychologically and physiologically, but also anatomically: the physical resemblance of preceding and subsequent degenerative generations, the transmission of some distinctive physiological peculiarities (habits, idiosyncrasies, oddities, etc.) indicate in which descending branches and generations from degenerates the process manifested itself, and which, on the contrary, escaped its influence.

In this broad question, as in any scientific task concerning man, it is necessary to be guided by the entire complexity of physiological, physical, and mental data.
