The corresponding subject, called “Approval of Sexual Diversity,” has already been approved by the coalition government of the federal state, consisting of the Greens and the SPD, and is to appear in the schedule of local schools in 2015.

According to opponents of the new course, the innovation is aimed at “pedagogical, moral and ideological re-education of students.”

The head of the local Greens, Oliver Hildenbrand, on the contrary, believes that the school must be made a place of diversity and approval. In the petition, however, as the Greens note, “the level of trans- and homophobia is off the charts.” The SPD parliamentary group’s press spokesman for education, Stefan Fulst-Blei, also stated that “the party stands for an open and tolerant society, while the online petition is permeated by a spirit of intolerance,” the publication reports.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the initiator of the petition, who turned out to be a teacher at a Realschule; the teacher’s professional suitability is being examined.

Against Tolerance, or Sodomy Above All!

Children learn tolerance, including towards their peers, teachers, various phenomena, worldviews, and lifestyles, precisely at school. But sometimes, writes Johanna Bruckner in the pages of the German publication Sueddeutsche Zeitung, tolerance ends there: “This is precisely the impression that arises in connection with the online petition initiated by Gabriel Stängle, a teacher at a Realschule in Baden-Württemberg.”

In the petition, which has already been signed by more than 68,000 people, Stängle opposes the plans of the coalition government of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg to teach “approval of sexual diversity” in lessons starting in 2015. In the journalist’s opinion, the teacher is propagating blatantly homophobic ideas. For example, the teacher is dissatisfied that the lessons included in the curriculum of local schools will provide more detailed “acquaintance with various forms of cohabitation of homosexuals, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, transsexuals, and intersexuals, but mentioning the negative aspects of such a lifestyle,” among which Stängle points to “increased propensity for suicide” and “higher susceptibility to alcohol and drug addiction.” Initially, charges of slander and incitement of hatred were brought against the teacher, but through the efforts of lawyers citing freedom of expression, the charges against Stängle were dropped, the article says.

“So how enlightened should the school be?” Bruckner asks. “Should it conduct such educational work so that young people can openly talk about their sexual orientation without fear of social isolation?” According to German sociologist Rainer Schütz, “loneliness remains the biggest problem for young homosexuals. Homophobia is much more widespread at school than in sports, and not just in rural areas.” Thus, according to a study by the University of Berlin, the word “faggot” continues to be the most common swear word in German schools.

The lack of understanding among students, Bruckner believes, is due to the fact that this phenomenon is hardly ever talked about.

The goal of the local government, as stated by the Minister of Culture of Baden-Württemberg, Andreas Stoch, is “a school in which there would be more openness and transparency.” “The new curriculum does not give preference, as they try to present in the petition, to the interests of gays and lesbians over other social groups,” emphasizes Stoch. “It’s just that this topic is not being hushed up, as it was in the past.” According to the official, it is planned to familiarize people with the issue in an appropriate form, which is “a step towards the norm.”
