***The High Court, part of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, has made a fundamentally new decision that may have serious consequences for the adoption of children by believing families. The court expressed the view that Christians with traditional views on sexual ethics are not suitable as foster parents—their beliefs may be harmful to children.***This stance of the British court is reflected in a decision of 28 February 2011 in case No. CO/4594/2010, a copy of which is held by the Institute for Religious Freedom.
This court decision concerns a dispute between the spouses Eunice and Owen Johns and the City Council of Derby (Derbyshire, England).
The Johns applied to the city council in 2007 with a request to foster a child. However, the city council hindered their application, as it did not approve the Johns’ refusal to help acquaint the child with homosexuality. In November 2010, both parties jointly appealed to the court for a final ruling: either to allow the Johns to foster a child or to prohibit it based on the Equality Act due to their Christian beliefs.
In its ruling, the court firmly defended the homosexual worldview. The Johns were deprived of the opportunity to foster a child because of their religious beliefs, despite their good reputation as foster parents.
In arguing its decision, the court expressed the view that traditional Christian moral beliefs are potentially harmful to children, and parents with Christian beliefs are not to be considered as potential foster parents.
The judges noted that there was no religious discrimination against the Johns in the decision, since they were denied the opportunity to raise a child because of their views on sexual ethics, not because of their Christian beliefs.
