The church at the FSB Academy will become the largest of the 200 prefabricated churches in Moscow.
“Up to a thousand worshippers can be accommodated in this church at the same time,” the press service of the Fund for Support of Church Construction told the Interfax-Religion portal. The idea to dedicate the church to the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God came from the academy leadership and received the blessing of the Russian Orthodox Church.
During an on-site meeting in the west of the capital, the curator of “Program-200,” Vladimir Resin, and the first deputy chairman of the Financial and Economic Administration of the Moscow Patriarchate, Hieromonk Nikodim (Kolesnikov), visited the church under construction.
At present, the lower chapel of the church is ready; brickwork of the walls of the above-ground part is underway at the site, and preparations for interior decoration are proceeding. The interior design project of the church is already being developed by academics Alexey Zhivaev and Evgeny Maximov, who worked on the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
According to the schedule, all work will be completed by the end of 2013. The community, headed by the rector, Archpriest Valery Baranov, regularly holds prayer services for the successful completion of construction.
“Program-200” started in 2009. Its idea came from Patriarch Kirill. The reason for building 200 new churches in the Russian capital was that Moscow today has the smallest number of churches per capita of the Orthodox population among all other regions of Russia.
