Old Believers Know the Secrets of Longevity

118 years old, but looks 60. Old Believers know the secrets of longevity! These Old Believers really shocked me. They put us to shame with their strength, balanced characters, and gentleness, with their health and hard work. Last year, fate brought me to Lake Baikal on the side of Buryatia. I am a hydrographer, and we were working on the Barguzin River. Almost untouched nature, purest air, good simple people — everything was delightful. But most of all I was amazed by the settlements of the “Semeyskie”. At first we couldn’t understand what that was. Then they explained to us that these were Old Believers.

The Semeyskie live in separate villages, they have very strict customs. Women still wear sarafans down to their heels, and men wear kosovorotki. They are very calm and friendly people, but they behave in such a way that you wouldn’t just barge in on them uninvited. They won’t just chat idly; we never saw that once. They are very hardworking people, never sitting idle. At first it was somewhat off-putting, then we got used to it. And later we noticed that everyone is healthy and good-looking, even the old folks. Our work was taking place right on the territory of their village, and to disturb the residents as little as possible, they gave us one grandpa, Vasily Stepanovich, to help. He helped us take measurements — quite convenient for both us and the residents. Over a month and a half of work we became friends, and the old man told us a lot of interesting things, and showed us too.

Of course, we talked about health too. Stepanovich often repeated that all illnesses come from the head. One day I pestered him, demanding an explanation of what he meant by that. And he answered: “Let’s take you five men. I can tell by the smell of your socks alone what you’re thinking!” We became curious, and then Stepanovich just stunned us. He said that if a person’s feet smell strongly, then their strongest feeling is the desire to postpone everything until later, do it tomorrow or even later. And he also said that men, especially modern men, are lazier than women, and that’s why their feet smell stronger. And added that there is no need to explain anything to him, but rather to answer honestly to oneself whether this is true or not. So, it turns out, thoughts influence a person, and even the feet!

The old man also said that if old people’s feet start to smell, it means a lot of waste has accumulated in the body, and one should fast or strictly observe a fast for about six months. We started trying to pry out of Stepanovich how old he was. He kept denying, and then said: “I’ll be as old as you guess.” We thought about it and decided he was about 58-60. Much later we learned that he was 118 years old, and that was precisely why he had been assigned to help us!

It turned out that all Old Believers are healthy people, they don’t go to doctors and treat themselves. They know a special abdominal massage, and everyone does it for themselves. And if an ailment sets in, the person, together with their loved ones, analyzes what thought or feeling or action could have caused the illness. That is, they try to understand what is wrong in their life. Then they start fasting…., and only after that do they drink herbs, infusions, and treat with natural substances.

Old Believers understand that all causes of illnesses are in a person’s head. For this reason, they refuse to listen to the radio or watch television, believing that such devices clutter the head and make a person a slave: because of these appliances, a person stops thinking for themselves. They consider their own life the greatest value.

The whole way of life of the Semeyskie made me reconsider many of my views on life. They don’t ask anyone for anything, but live well, in prosperity. Every person’s face shines, expressing dignity, but not pride. These people don’t offend anyone, don’t insult, no one swears with foul language, they don’t make fun of anyone, don’t gloat. Everyone works — from young to old. Special respect for the elderly; the young do not contradict their elders. They especially honor cleanliness, and cleanliness in everything, from clothes, home, to thoughts and feelings. If you could see these extraordinarily clean houses with crisp curtains on the windows and valances on the beds! Everything is washed and scrubbed spotless. All their animals are well-groomed. The clothes are beautiful, embroidered with various patterns that serve as protection for people. They simply don’t talk about infidelity of husband or wife, because there it doesn’t exist and cannot exist. People are driven by a moral law, which is nowhere written, but everyone honors and observes it. And for observing this law, they have received as a reward health and longevity, and what longevity!

When I returned to the city, I very often remembered Stepanovich. It was difficult for me to tie together what he said and modern life with its computers, airplanes, telephones, satellites. On the one hand, technological progress is good, but on the other… We have truly lost ourselves, understand ourselves poorly, shifted responsibility for our lives to parents, doctors, the government. Maybe that is why there are no longer truly strong and healthy people. What if we are actually dying out without understanding it? We imagined that we had become smarter than everyone, because our technology is extraordinarily diverse. But it turns out that because of technology, we are losing ourselves.
