People Are Not Inclined to Commit Suicide Where Protestantism Prevails
According to official statistics, every year 1.1 million people worldwide take their own lives. Among them are 350,000 Chinese, 110,000 Indians, 55,000 Russians, 31,000 Americans, 30,000 Japanese, 12,000 Ukrainians, and 10,000 French. High and very high suicide rates (above 20 per 100,000 population) are recorded in Lithuania (42), Belarus (37), Russia (36), Kazakhstan (30), Hungary (28), Latvia (26), and Ukraine (25). Countries with medium suicide rates (10–20 per 100,000) include France, China, Germany, Canada, Australia, and the United States.
The list of countries with minimal suicide rates (up to 10 per 100,000) may come as something of a surprise: alongside Italy, England, and Israel are the post-Soviet states of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. The fewest suicides are committed in Egypt, Haiti, and Jamaica. In these countries — one torn by political upheaval, and the other two generally characterized by high danger to life — the suicide rate is close to zero. One can notice the prevalence of suicide in Eastern Slavic countries.
On the other hand, people are less inclined to take their own lives in places where Protestantism or Islam predominate.
In terms of the absolute number of teenage suicides, Russia ranks first in the world. Alongside unrequited love and family-domestic conflicts, the main causes of suicide are loneliness, fear of the future, and the absence of hope.

a family psychologist with Focus on the Family. “Often young people cannot cope with
difficult situations. They do not know that God works through hard times, that everything
is in His hands.”
Recently, Pope Benedict XVI stated in his address that life without hope in eternity leads to despair. “Faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ” is “the decisive factor.” This is “the fundamental difference between those who believe and those who do not believe, or one might equally say, between those who have hope and those who do not.”

Suicide Rate in Russia Nearly Four Times Above the Critical Level
In Russia, there are 38–40 suicides per 100,000 population, while the critical level is considered to be 11 suicides per the same number. This was reported by Anna Anatolyevna Portnova, chief child psychiatrist of Moscow and head of the department of emergency psychiatry and disaster response at the V. P. Serbsky State Scientific Center for Social and Forensic Psychiatry of the Ministry of Health and Social Development of the Russian Federation, at a press conference dedicated to teenage suicides in Russia held today at the Komsomolskaya Pravda publishing house. Moreover, according to statistics, the number of teenage suicides has fallen twofold over the past two years: from 500 cases in 2008 to 240 in 2010, as Evdokia Ivanovna Bychkova, deputy of the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and member of the committee on family, women, and children, reported.
The situation is especially grave in the provinces: according to Anatoly Alekseevich Severny, president of the Association of Child Psychiatrists and Psychologists, the number of suicides there exceeds the number in Moscow by several times, while help is significantly scarcer.
In the capital, the situation is also far from ideal. Every administrative district of Moscow has centers for social psychological-psychiatric assistance, but few people know about them. Anatoly Alekseevich Severny called on journalists to help ensure that this information becomes available in every school.
In addition, assistance to adolescents under 15 is provided only with parental consent. Thirteen years ago, the idea arose of creating crisis centers for teenagers where they could seek help on their own, but to this day the state, which took on the obligation to establish such centers, has not implemented these plans.
