“Monsanto Protection Act” quietly and without any fuss was passed by the U.S. Congress. There were no discussions in the mainstream media and no debates in Congress. Only Obama’s signature remains, and then Monsanto, along with some other GMO-producing corporations, will officially be placed above U.S. law. This became possible thanks to a secret collusion between corrupt officials and corporations.
Bill HR 933 — a short-term agricultural funding bill for 2013 — was passed by the House of Representatives last week. Attached to this seemingly harmless document is a “poisonous biotech pill” under its official name — Section 735 amendment or the “Farmer Assurance Provision” — which outraged American farmers precisely call the “Monsanto Protection Act.” Section 735 has no logical connection whatsoever to HR 933, agricultural funding, let alone to “farmer assurances,” but it was inserted into HR 933 to disguise it and ease its passage.

As of now, over 200,000 people from all 50 states have signed a petition to Obama demanding a veto of this law. The Monsanto Protection Act strips federal courts of the ability to prohibit the cultivation and sale of genetically modified products, regardless of the harm they inflict on consumer health and the environment. Even if it were proven that certain products are hazardous to health, no one could stop Monsanto from selling them to people, moreover even without the appropriate warning labels.

After Obama’s signature, Monsanto’s de facto power will become de jure. Until now, though the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) at least pretended to control GMO cultivation, Monsanto in practice approved all products without safety testing. Now even that pretense will be gone.

In December 2009, environmental activists already warned that Monsanto’s GMO feed alfalfa was hazardous to health and demanded it be banned. That, of course, did not happen. Subsequently, disease-causing microorganisms were discovered in Monsanto’s corn and soybeans, which had a harmful effect on plants and caused infertility in livestock. Recently, the results of a French expert assessment of Monsanto’s GMO corn, which causes cancer, spread around the world. Several countries, including Russia, banned the import of this product, while Americans continue to be force-fed it to this day.

It is officially asserted that HR 933 is set to expire in 6 months. However, first of all, it is not yet known how this will affect the Section 735 amendment. And secondly, during this period many health-hazardous GMOs could be pushed onto the market.
Food Democracy Now! reports that there are already 13 products Monsanto intends to sell, but until now feared accusations of their danger — or rather, did not want to pay large bribes.

In reality, the Monsanto Protection Act will open a “Pandora’s box” of uncontrolled distribution of health-hazardous products not only for Monsanto, but also for other GMO and poison-producing corporations: DuPont, Dow Chemical, Syngenta Corp, Cargill, and others. According to its opponents, the Monsanto Protection Act sets a shocking precedent, placing a group of people (who have no connection to the government) above the law, abolishes judicial prosecution for these people, destroys protections for ordinary farmers, threatens the environment, the health and lives of citizens, and violates the Constitution.
Therefore, many activists, environmentalists, farmers, and concerned citizens, who had previously desperately protested against GMOs and Monsanto’s total power, are now rising with renewed indignation to defend their future.
