After the reelection of Democrat Barack Obama as U.S. president last week, more than 600,000 Americans signed petitions for their states to withdraw from the union.

The petitions are posted on the White House website in a section titled “We the People,” where anyone can draft their own petition or join an existing one. https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions

As of now, petitions have been received from residents of 50 states:

Most petitions are only a few lines long. For example, the request from residents of Tennessee, which 8,000 people signed, reads: “We ask that the state of Tennessee be peacefully granted the right to withdraw from the United States and create its own new government.”

In terms of signatures, Texas leads so far. It has already “surpassed” the 25,000-vote threshold, after which the White House must issue an official response to the petition.

Texans specifically complain about “flagrant violations” of human rights, including the screening of airport passengers by Transportation Security Administration officers.

The authors of the petitions cite the Declaration of Independence, in which the founding fathers of the United States proclaimed that “whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive … it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.”

Most petitions were filed by residents of states that gave their votes to Obama’s rival, Republican Mitt Romney, who ultimately lost the election.

However, petitions also came from states that supported the current White House incumbent.

The last time several states left the union was in 1860 and 1861, after the election of President Abraham Lincoln. That was followed by the Civil War.

Washington, November 13 (New Region, Alexei Usov) – More than half of U.S. states have joined the campaign for a peaceful exit from the union. On Monday in America, the number of signatories to petitions from different states jumped from 100,000 to 350,000; overnight, nine more states joined the 20 that had already notified Obama of their desire to leave the United States because of “government tyranny.” The profile of territories participating in the campaign shatters all stereotypes: independence is being demanded by states with almost exclusively white populations (Montana) as well as “black” ones — New York and Florida, by ultra-conservative Arizona and Texas, and by ultra-liberal New Jersey and California. One thing unites the campaign participants — they all wanted not just to give Obama their “boo,” but to use the official tools of the White House to force the president to publicly respond to the “manifestos of no confidence.”

During the night that passed in Russia, the first working day after the launch of the “neo-Confederate” petition campaign took place on U.S. soil. Over that day, the campaign, which initially seemed a marginal official-based flash mob, gained the scale and strength of a powerful political movement, overshadowing the leftist “Occupy” movement. By Tuesday morning in Russia (evening/night Monday in the U.S.), residents of nine more states joined the 20 that had already submitted petitions to the White House website: Alaska, Delaware, California, Oklahoma, Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wyoming — all of them published identically worded statements. “Let the state of X peacefully withdraw from the United States of America and form its own new government” the appeals to Obama read. The demands are backed by quotations from the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

In 12 hours, the number of campaign participants rose from one hundred thousand to 350,000 people — and these are not internet anonymous users, but U.S. citizens who have authorized on the White House website using their personal data. Texans more than doubled the “quota” for the number of signatories: over 56,000 residents of the “Lone Star State” have spoken out for the creation of a Republic of Texas. On Monday, the 25,000-vote threshold after which a petition becomes an official appeal and reaches Obama’s desk was crossed by a petition from Louisiana residents and a separate demand to recount the voting results of the presidential election. The latter petition gathered more than 31,000 votes.

The “neo-Confederate” campaign essentially turned into a nationwide way to express distrust of “commie Obama.” Official mechanisms for states to secede from the USA seemingly exist in the Constitution and its amendments. But these “exits” were firmly “sealed” back by Franklin Roosevelt, who, for pragmatic reasons, repeatedly violated the “commandments” of the US Constitution and, through Supreme Court decisions, insured himself against reciprocal protest in the form of separatism by individual states.

Some states indicated in their petitions that they were asking President Obama to allow them to hold a referendum on secession from the USA. A referendum of this kind within an individual state can be held by residents even without the president’s sanction. So these petitions turned out to be, rather, a very cruel mockery of the re-elected president. Discontented citizens found a way, through official instruments, to tell Obama—and to force the president to publicly respond.

It was pointed out above that the roster of states whose residents took part in the “separatist” action is extremely diverse and refutes any common notions about the “characters” of the participating states. The campaign included both almost racially homogeneous states and those where the numbers of Latinos, blacks, and Asians approach 50% of the population. Both traditionally conservative states and ultra-liberal New York and “Commiefornia”-California joined in. States where most of the population is concentrated in large cities did so, as did “rural” ones, for example Wyoming or Alaska.

American political scientists suggested that a specific population group became the common denominator for all the states participating in the campaign. The so-called “lost electorate”—the voters of Republican candidate Ron Paul, who yielded the leadership to Mitt Romney.

Romney rejected Paul’s voters, and, as analysts at policymic.com believe, it is precisely because of this that he lost the election (see the table in the illustrations). Let us note that Ron Paul’s voters are a very specific contingent. They are libertarians, partly “right-wing anarchists,” combat veterans, many members of the National Guard and various unofficial militia formations from different states. Ron Paul was also supported by survivalists of all stripes and a significant number (if not the majority) of NRA – “National Rifle Association” members (all of these sets often overlap). Romney, analysts believe, did not suit these voters and did not “make use” of them himself—he proved not specific enough in his program, not firm enough in his judgments, and too eager to “be a good boy.” Paul’s radicals did not fit into his program, and it is thought that a large part of them ignored the election, letting Obama win.

Meanwhile, in his program Ron Paul said almost word-for-word what Texas residents assert in their secession petition: about state tyranny, about the USA gradually turning into a totalitarian police state. Moreover, among Paul’s supporters, ideas about ever-greater autonomization of conservative states, their disengagement from the federal center and the influence of liberals, were popular. Perhaps the current “neo-Confederate” campaign, which has already engulfed more than half of the US states, is the sudden return onto the political stage of Ron Paul’s “lost voters” and others who found no choice for themselves in the meager contrast between “dreary and colorless Romney” and “commie Obama.”
