According to the cited statistics, in 2010, 2.6 million followers of Islam lived in the United States, compared to only 1 million in 2000. For the first time, the number of Muslims in most Midwest states and several Southern states exceeded the number of Jews. According to researcher Dale Jones, who presented the report at a conference in Chicago, the growth of Muslims in the U.S. is fueled by immigration and the influx of new believers from other religions, ITAR-TASS reports.

“Christians are the largest religious group in all states. The greatest growth in adherents among Christian denominations is seen among Mormons,” Jones noted. The number of followers of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as Mormonism is officially called in the U.S., increased by 45% over the reporting period to 6.1 million people.

The number of parishioners of the Roman Catholic Church decreased by 5% over ten years to 58.9 million people. “Catholics are the largest religious group to register a decline in followers,” Jones noted.

The study showed that the number of Protestant followers is also declining. The number of Baptists remained at the same level—19.9 million; Methodists decreased by 4% to 9.9 million; Lutherans fell by 18% to 4.2 million; Episcopalians declined by 15% to 1.95 million. There are almost 1 million Buddhists in the U.S., and their numbers are growing, according to researchers.

The report notes that nearly 55% of Americans regularly attend religious services. About 158 million people—just over half the country’s population—do not identify with any of the listed religions.
