The agreement between Russia and the United States on mutual simplification of visa formalities enters into force today.

The Russian Foreign Ministry explained that “the document provides for the issuance of three-year multiple-entry visas to citizens of Russia and the United States for continuous stay in each country for up to 6 months from the date of entry. At the same time, the Russian Federation will issue business, private, humanitarian, and tourist visas upon direct invitations from citizens and organizations, while the United States of America — visas of the „B1/B2“ category (business/tourist). Visas will generally be issued within 15 calendar days from the date of document submission.”

Moscow expects that the agreement “will not only contribute to the activation of the entire range of economic, cultural, scientific, and humanitarian ties between the two countries, but will also create favorable preconditions for further steps towards liberalizing the bilateral visa regime, up to its complete abolition.”

As stated by U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation Michael McFaul, “the United States is striving for the complete abolition of visas with Russia.” “We will work on this /on the complete abolition of visas/,” he said. According to him, this year about 160 thousand Russians have already received U.S. visas. “This is a record,” the diplomat emphasized. In his opinion, this agreement is “a big step forward, a new symbol in bilateral relations.”
