In the Australian state of Victoria, representatives of the Roman Catholic Church have confirmed that more than 600 children have become victims of pedophile priests from 1930 to the present day. According to Melbourne Archbishop Denis Hart, such statistics are “appalling.”
The figures on the number of children victimized by pedophile priests were released at the request of the state parliament.
At the same time, human rights advocates say the real number of victims, including unreported cases of abuse, could reach 10,000 in the state of Victoria alone, BBC reports.
Recall that on February 8, an unprecedented conference was held at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. In the presence of senior Church hierarchs, victims of pedophile priests recounted the tragedies they had experienced.
A striking statement was made by Father Stephen Rossetti of the Catholic University of America. After the pedophilia scandal erupted in the American Church in 2002, “many countries began saying that this was an American problem,” he said, adding that later a similar scandal erupted in Ireland—and then people started speaking of it as a problem of the English-speaking world. But it turned out that the problem exists in Italy, Germany, France, and then people began calling it a problem of the Western world. “I urged priests to reach out to people working in child protection services,” the prelate said during a press conference. “Then they will learn that there are far more victims of pedophilia than they think.”
