If you feel unbalanced from contact with your boss, mentors…, then it is quite possible that person is a psychopath who takes pleasure in fraying other people’s nerves, explained British psychologist Kevin Dutton, who compiled a list of the professions psychopaths choose most willingly. The author of the book The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies, and Serial Killers Can Teach Us About Success listed 10 jobs that soothe an unbalanced psyche and 10 specialties that psychopaths would choose last, reports Business Insider.
The English writer, who also works as a psychologist at a research center in the field of anthropogenesis at Oxford University, tried to understand psychopaths and unravel the secret of their professional success not only through his scientific work but also through the example of his father, a dealer, who had an unbearable character but could sell anything and never anticipated failure, writes the Guardian. As Dutton asserts, psychopaths are huge optimists, talented con artists, and scammers.

At the beginning of his book, the writer gives an example of a girl who, at her mother’s funeral, met a young man with whom she fell in love at first sight, but forgot to exchange contact details. Some time later, she killed her sister in the hope that her love would come to the new funeral. Using this example, as well as through analyses of the behavior of famous serial killers, rapists, and terrorists, Dutton identified that the main qualities of a psychopath are off-the-charts cold-bloodedness, ruthlessness, selfishness, lack of emotions, and a focus on results, according to the book’s annotation on Amazon.

This whole set of qualities can easily help achieve success if directed into the right channel. However, it is not certain that those around will be comfortable next to such an employee. Among other conditions that allow a psychopath to feel fulfilled are a sense of dominance over others, suppressing others, and self-assertion at their expense.

Based on the conditions of an ideal workplace for a person with an unbalanced psyche, the writer compiled a ranking of the 10 most “psychopathic” professions in descending order:

Among the 10 least attractive professions for psychopaths were specialties such as caregiver, nurse, therapist, service worker, stylist, charity worker, teacher, artist, doctor, and accountant. All of them require empathy and attentiveness to others, which is not characteristic of psychopaths.
