A Chrislam prayer house to appear in Berlin

· Germany, Denominations

In the center of the German capital, the first shared house of prayer for Christians, Jews, and Muslims is being built.

The building will be called “House of Prayer and Study of Religions on Petriplatz.” According to the project, it will include separate rooms for prayer for Jews, Muslims, and Christians, as well as a common meeting space, reports the portal “Sedmitza.ru” with reference to the Austrian site Religion.ORF.at.

The three-level cube-shaped house is being constructed on the site of the former Lutheran Church of St. Peter in the city center.

In an interview with radio “Berlin-Brandenburg” (RBB), the pastor of the evangelical church, Grigor Hoberg, spoke about the origin of the project: “We noticed that the population ratio in the city is changing – more and more Muslims are appearing. For us, this means that there is a need to establish interfaith dialogue.”

Among the founding members of the project are the Protestant parish of St. Peter and St. Mary, the Jewish community of Berlin, the Abraham Geiger College, the Muslim Forum for Intercultural Dialogue in Berlin, and the government of the federal state of Berlin.

On the outside, the building, constructed of smooth brick, is not associated with a sacred structure. The interior decoration contains elements of Christian, Muslim, and Jewish architecture, explained architect Johannes Kühn. The synagogue is oriented towards Jerusalem, the mosque towards Mecca, and the Christian church towards the place where the city originated: Petriplatz is considered to be that place — in 2007, during excavations, the foundation of the old church of St. Peter was discovered here. The first inhabitant of the city known by name is a priest of this church, mentioned in documents from 1237.

After the church was destroyed during World War II, the East German government decided in 1964 to completely eliminate the remains of the temple.
