Sudan: Woman Sentenced to Death for Rejecting Islam
In Sudan, where the majority of the population practices Islam, strict Sharia law is in force
A court in Sudan has sentenced a pregnant woman to hanging for apostasy after she converted from Islam to Christianity.
“We gave you three days to repent, but you persist in your decision not to return to Islam. I sentence you to hanging,” the judge told the defendant, named Mariam Yahya Ibrahim Ishag.
Western embassies and human rights organizations are calling on Sudan to respect the woman’s right to freedom of religion and to release her.
Local media report that the sentence will not be carried out until two years after the birth of her child.
The judge also sentenced the woman to 100 lashes for adultery, as her marriage to a Christian is not recognized by law.

Grew Up in a Christian Family
Before the sentencing, an Islamic imam spoke with the defendant in the courtroom, where she was placed in a cage, for half an hour.
The judge addressed the defendant by her Muslim name – Adraf Hadi Mohammed Abdulla.
After this, the woman told the judge: “I am a Christian and I have never committed apostasy.”
Amnesty International said Mariam Yahya Ibrahim Ishag is in her ninth month of pregnancy and must be released immediately.
“Amnesty International considers Mariam a prisoner of conscience, convicted solely for her religious beliefs, and she must be released immediately and unconditionally,” said Manar Idriss, a staff member of the organization’s Sudan office.
Mariam, according to human rights activists, grew up in a Christian family and was raised by her Christian mother, as her Muslim father left the family.
She was arrested and charged with adultery in August 2013, and in February of this year the court added the charge of apostasy when she stated that she was a Christian, not a Muslim.
