The example of the Portland church is very telling.

In Los Angeles there was a Christian who emigrated in the 1980s. He came to Portland and made an arrangement with an American Pentecostal church, the “Foursquare Gospel Church.” He acquired a building on Otty Street.

By 1990, when there were already 400 members, Melnik sensed a certain alienation. At that time, an activist core formed within the church, consisting of the future bishop of Oregon, Vasily Vakulsky, his faithful co-worker Vladimir Durshpek (now deceased, the father of Suzanna Franchuk—wife of the well-known tale-spinner Pavel Franchuk), and the future presbyter of the Sulamita church, Nikolai Zakharovich Mikhalchuk.

The scam with the Chernobyl children, who in the majority were the children of Ukrainian officials.

The scandal reached the Portland newspaper The Oregonian. I decided to check the information from the Oregonian’s correspondent and visited the church on Otty Street. Vladimir Durshpek confided in me about how they had opened Melnik’s safe while he was away and discovered checks from Americans.

Vladimir Durshpek presented himself as a prisoner of faith, but later it came out that he had served time for betraying Bolsheviks to the Germans.

After that, Melnik was forced out of the church and, as I understand it, left as a missionary to Ukraine. I don’t know what has happened to him since—whether he is alive or not.

After Melnik was ousted, these aggressive church leaders—Vakulsky, Durshpek, and Mikhalchuk—began to tear at each other for primacy and for the building on Otty Street.

Where does such a lust for power come from? Most likely they are “secret disciples,” sent with a specific assignment and let loose for that purpose.

About the Secret Disciples

A brother from Tennessee—the presbyter Vasily—told me where the destruction of the church originates. He had been a presbyter in Ukraine in the late 1980s. The KGB summoned him and asked:

Did you know that some of your fellow believers have already gone to America?
I’ve heard.
Do you want to go?
I do.
Well then, we’ll help you get out.
You don’t just let people go for nothing. What do you want in return? — asked Vasily.
You’re right, we don’t let people go for nothing. Have you heard that Christ had secret disciples?
I’ve read about it.
Well, you will be our secret disciple over there in America — said the KGB officers. You will go and start a church there.
I don’t quite get it: you’re the KGB, and you’re sending me to America to start a church?!
That’s right! What, is starting a church a bad thing? Preaching salvation? You’re a charismatic person; people love you and will follow you. Many of your fellow believers are going that way now. Trust us, we know. Just imagine: 100 members drop $100 each into your pocket—wouldn’t that be nice? And later you’ll have 500 members.
And what do you want for this?
You’ll get there, get settled, find your feet. Then we’ll find you ourselves. If things get tough for you, we’ll help! You have problems—we’ll solve them! Agree!

Brother Vasily was a God-fearing Christian and refused such cooperation. Until the collapse of the Soviet Union and for several more years after Ukraine’s independence, brother Vasily could not leave because the KGB/SBU kept putting obstacles in his way.

Brother Vasily says that he knows other ministers who were also offered to become “secret disciples” of the KGB, and they accepted and went to organize churches in the United States. Now they all lead large churches in America.

Initially, the KGB’s secret disciples didn’t know whom they should obey here; they acted crudely and fought with one another. According to KGB rules, operatives work for the same master but do not know one another; they work on the same team and recognize one another as working for the same boss.

In other words, their work is not some apostolic sending—that they came and organized churches, as the Apostle Paul and other apostles did on missionary journeys. The zeal for organizing churches and brotherly unions among the KGB’s “secret disciples” of the USSR and today’s pastor-bishops came from the party assignment to organize churches in the USA for departing fellow believers.

They probably couldn’t fail in organizing churches. As many have noted: a person arrives with, at best, a dubious reputation, even trailing a record of collaboration with the authorities, and immediately a building is found for him, people are given to him—entire families of captive believers to serve such a “secret disciple.” He is proclaimed a great minister, an anointed one of the Lord God Himself. Meanwhile, those brothers who are truly gifted by God and able to serve—such ones have their work demolished, slander is raised against them, and worthless people are found to keep them outside the church. Remember the Apostle John and Diotrephes, who refused to welcome the apostle into the church.

Where do the secret disciples get such a drive for organizing and controlling within the church? Several factors are at play here:

an irrepressible craving for power, honor, and primacy
a secure, well-fed, carefree life in honor
the ability to influence and manipulate people according to one’s whims

Vakulsky locked in mortal combat with Nikolai Zakharych. Someone advised Mikhalchuk to call for help the heretic Arkadiy Khemchan from Woodburn. Together with Khemchan they defeated Vakulsky and Durshpek and the building on Otty remained with Zakharych. Vakulsky and Durshpek had to leave. But Zakharych gained an even greater enemy — Arkadiy Khemchan.

The war between Mikhalchuk and Khemchan was most fierce. They even cast lots. The building was at stake. Because whoever has the building, has the people. No building, no people.

So all these people acquired buildings. Vakulsky and Durshpek acquired one on the corner of 93rd and Foster, Zakharych built on Sandy Boulevard, and Arkadiy Khemchan rented for a long time and eventually acquired a building on Lake Road in Milwaukee.

Following the pattern of the struggle in Portland, all the churches in Portland were organized.

Now they talk about unity, urge to stop reproaches, to stop warring with one another. They speak of “the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace”! But they do not talk about how they came to power. And now when people talk about their deeds, they say one mustn’t do that, one must treat brothers with love, respect — for these are brother-servants! That’s not right.

And who appointed them? By intrigue! By war against each other! By breaking open the safe and the pastor’s office! By driving out the pastor who invested his energy, time, and money! Who spent a couple of years taking care of these refugees!

Refugees — Members of the First Churches

According to the Gospel, we do not see that the church depends on a building. If there is a church assembly, a building would be found. Here it is the opposite: where there’s a building, there’s a congregation. That is why everything is not according to the Gospel, because there everything was not according to the Gospel from the start.

What makes people follow a building, follow a stranger? If they went through persecution, why did they make such a great mistake here? Or are these people who in reality were not persecuted there, who were in registered churches and became accustomed to obeying and serving the secret disciples of the KGB of the USSR.

The main thing in the construction of these Portland megachurches was the building. If ten disagreeables with the policy of the presbyter-secret disciple appeared in a week, that same week they would receive 20 other members, who were brought to Portland airport first from the camp near Rome, Italy, and later directly from the republics of the former USSR.

Returning to the refugees.

When the doors to America opened, people who had no idea what persecution was took advantage of them.

Strangely, about 70 percent of those who rushed into this emigration were people belonging to KGB-controlled churches of the AUCECB. To the official, registered, Soviet, Protestant churches^

that bowed down to the Soviet authorities from the waist.
that celebrated godless, Soviet holidays.
that honored Lenin and other godless ones even above Christ (the well-known book by the head of the AUCECB, Karev).
that called us prisoners, those who sat in prison, anti-Soviet.

Even churches that were not registered adapted themselves to the anti-Christian situation in the country. They sensed whom to lick and whom to bark at. And then there were the registered churches, which were directly subordinate to the commissioner for religious affairs (an officer of the KGB).

By the way, unregistered churches that compromised also served as a beacon. If you do not agree with the official registered AUCECB church, then go to an unregistered one. See, people gather in homes. They do not agree with the authorities. Over in the neighboring town, on the neighboring street, they hide in tents, in the woods. But in reality it was the same thing. Completely under the cap of the commissioner. Who preached in the churches that:

all authority is from God;
whoever resists authority resists God’s ordinance;
the servant does not bear the sword in vain, to punish those who break the laws
and those who are sitting or sat in prison did not suffer for God. But they suffered because they went against the authorities and God’s servants. For them there was no longer any difference: a presbyter — “God’s servant,” and the commissioner for religious affairs — also “God’s servant.”

And so these people forgot that all authority is from God and that one must obey the authorities — as soon as the door opened, they were among the first to rush out.

Naturally, what morality can such people have when they:

are accustomed to adapting.
are accustomed to serving man
are accustomed to being guided by instinct, by fear. Fear is an instinct. It is written that the cowardly and the rest—their lot is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur.

Why Isn’t the Holy Spirit Working?

Why is there such a situation in the churches? If the people were believers, then seeing how Vakulsky, Zakharych, and Durshpek were driving out Melnik, they would have sided with Melnik, who as a pastor took care of newcomers like little children without knowledge of the culture or language. They should have driven both of them out of the church and told them to settle it outside the church. But they drove out Pastor Melnik. And this did not happen because the people do not consider and do not want to consider how a servant is chosen according to the Gospel.

These people easily believe slander, easily believe words that someone is a bishop or God’s servant. They do not judge a man by his fruits, and if you begin to examine, they hinder you from looking, from “judging,” from speaking. These people are easily manipulated. The people readily listen to another, a stranger, and the question arises: did they ever know Christ?

In any case, history is always made by a few people. As a rule, small groups of people make history, whether in a negative or positive sense.

The general mass of people, however, is very easily processed.

But we are talking about how it is possible to so easily manipulate a person who reads the Gospel daily, prays to God daily, strives to live a life in accordance with the Gospel, who is supposed to be the light and the salt of the earth!

So if such a person is manipulated, then he is no salt at all. And if it was salt, it has lost its taste, if he is manipulated. If he listens to the voice of another shepherd and follows him—that indicates that there is no Holy Spirit in that person!

Here is the answer to the question: why is it that the Holy Spirit is not at work!
