“My Russia is a great artery from which a few ‘chosen’ people are siphoning off its wealth. My Russia is a beggar. My Russia cannot help the elderly and orphans. From her, bleeding like a sinking ship, engineers, doctors, teachers are fleeing because they have nothing to live on. My Russia is an endless Caucasian war. These embittered fraternal peoples, who once spoke a single language now banned from being taught in schools. My Russia is a victor who overthrew fascism, buying victory at the cost of millions of lives. Tell me, how and why is nationalism flourishing in this country? My dear, poor Russia. I am still proud that I was born in this great and beautiful country that has given so much to the world,” these words, among others, were spoken by 24-year-old Natalia Pereverzeva before the international jury.

How can one not recall Lermontov: “I love my fatherland, but with a strange love.”

Reactions to the statement in the contestant’s homeland were mixed. For example, an online poll on the Komsomolskaya Pravda website showed that over 90% of our compatriots consider these words to be the truth.

Political analyst Valery Ostrovsky is among those who approved of the beauty’s frankness. “The girl said what she thought. I think we should approve. I recently watched the most popular American TV series that won an award in 2012. It’s called Homeland — it’s a series about the mess that’s happening in America. Maybe this girl is heralding some new mood, when we will love our country but at the same time say what we think.”

But there are also those who believe that the contestant slandered the country. For instance, Victoria Lopyreva, Miss Russia 2003, considers Pereverzeva’s statement unpatriotic and unprofessional: “I would never allow myself to say anything negative about Russia, especially when you are representing this country on an international level. Well, the organizers of Russian pageants need to be more careful next time about who they send to international contests, and explain that when you represent a power like Russia, your speech should convey pride, not regret. It’s strange and unpatriotic.”

However, according to Lopyreva, even such an unconventional presentation of her country should not prevent Natalia from winning the crown. The judges are unlikely to lower her scores because of this.

However, Natalia Pereverzeva herself said in an interview with KP that Miss Earth is the last beauty pageant in her life.

“For me, this pageant is in any case the last. Regardless of whether I win it or not, it’s some kind of final point, the peak of my career, and after it come other goals, other opportunities, other horizons open up. Probably, at some point you need to stop with pageants. It’s such a struggle with myself.”

For now, Natalia Pereverzeva is considered one of the favorites of the pageant.
