Kyiv Patriarch Filaret in Canada

“The authorities must protect the Ukrainian language” – this was stated by Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine in a comment to UNIAN before the start of the All-Ukrainian Forum “In Defense of the Ukrainian Language and Statehood”.
In turn, the authorities should also protect the Ukrainian language. “Because if it does not protect the Ukrainian language, it should not be in Ukraine,” he said. “Russia wants to destroy our language. Why destroy the language? In order to destroy our Ukrainian State,” the patriarch said and added that the Ukrainian authorities “for various reasons” make concessions to Russia.
“It is strange that in the 21st century we have to defend our native language,” he said, adding that every Ukrainian should defend the language, thus defending Ukraine, its independence and culture.
Answering the question of how exactly Ukrainians should defend their language, the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate noted that they, first of all, should speak their native language themselves and raise their children accordingly. The patriarch also added that educational institutions should conduct teaching in the Ukrainian language. “Ukrainians must stand up for their native language, starting with the proper upbringing of their children.”
