The tithe takes its beginning from Abraham, when he returned and gave a tithe of the captured spoils to the priest of God Most High, Melchizedek; then he continued: in the law it is established as an obligatory payment and is designated as righteousness, and whoever does not pay falls under a curse, reading from the book of the prophet Malachi, chapter 3, verses 7‑9, “You are cursed with a curse, for you—the whole nation—are robbing Me. How? In tithes and offerings.”
Then he continued: the tithe must be paid from the full income, not from the remainder. At this he invited teenagers onto the stage; he took a loaf of bread, “This is your full income,” then he approaches the first, has him take a bite and says, “This is what you paid for SMUD,” he approaches the second, he also took a bite – “This is what you paid toward rent,” and so on… the remaining bites were named expenses for the telephone, various insurances, stores, and other expenditures. And only as the very last thing he said – you pay the tithe from the leftover bitten loaf; God does not need these scraps. Then Mikhail brought a whole loaf: “You see, you must first pay the tithe from the whole, and then everything else.” Commentary – after these procedures the loaf was almost whole, only a small part had been bitten off; the scenario clearly failed. In his place, for a demonstration, I would have brought a stick of sausage instead; the teenagers would have had a snack, and hardly a small piece would have remained.
After the meeting ended … I approached Mikhail, and I asked him: “To whom was the tithe given? – he answered: “To the priest,” and now? – he was silent. I continued; you said – Abraham gave a tithe of the captured spoils to the priest of God Most High, Melchizedek, but it was not from his income; he did not give a single sheep from his own flock, and he had many of them, for Abraham was the richest man in that area. So how are we to understand this, and what significance does it have for us and the church now? – what are you teaching, in your sermon? – I must rob, and from that give a tithe to the pastor, so it turns out. Of course, he did not expect such a rebuke from me; his eyes went dim; then he and his wife standing nearby retorted in one voice: “You are not a member of our church and have no right to ask us such questions.” I objected – according to Scripture you must give an answer to anyone concerning your hope, and even more so concerning your sermon. In conclusion. The scenario with the little bun is neither more nor less than the deliberate delirium of a heretic religionist. If you take the income from SSI, it is $600‑800, then there is almost nothing to bite here; for rent alone you must pay at least $300, and further; you need to eat, gasoline, various insurances and bills, and if you cannot pay the rent, you will simply be evicted onto the street – yet not one minister will lift a finger to help him. The benefit is given by the state as a minimum subsistence level from which no taxes at all are taken; the American government saw to that. But the pastors – the priests – have imposed the tithe as a tax, and from this they receive for themselves a huge salary of $2000 – 5000 – 10000, plus various benefits and income from side and secret businesses; they buy up land, build expensive houses, villas, travel to various countries, resorts; in a word, they live on a grand scale, having already established a kingdom for themselves on earth. At the same time they declare: “you are giving money to God, not to us, and it is none of your business where the pastor spends it.” What a deception, and people believe, for in reality God does not need a single penny. From the above one may draw a conclusion: “Rom. 16:18 – for these people do not serve the Lord, but their own belly, and by smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the simple.” What does Scripture say about the true worker for the Lord: “The laborer is worthy of his sustenance,” note – “Sustenance,” and what is actually happening here? Regarding the payment of the tithe they have introduced a whole bookkeeping and accounting system, and whoever does not pay is placed on a blacklist, and a notification is sent to him; they pressure the conscience and mind, extorting the last pennies, peering into the pockets of the people, all the while acting in the name of God, brazenly and shamelessly. What order for giving does the Lord establish.
The Apostle Paul established the following rule in the churches, 1 Cor. 16:1-2, 2 Cor. 9:5-12 — set aside something in store, as much as his circumstances allow, and each one give according to the disposition of his heart, not under compulsion, so that it may not be like an exaction. As you see, the New Testament Scripture established a new rule about giving, and nowhere does it mention the tithe, or the need to sacrifice rams or goats.
Whoever reads the law and keeps it remains without Christ, because … Christ is the end of the law Rom. 10:4
And as it is written: 2 Cor. 3:13-16 But the minds of the believers were blinded, for the same veil remains unlifted in the reading of the Old Testament, because the veil is taken away only in Christ. But there is no Christ there long ago, therefore these ministers—tithe-mongers and bribe-takers—now put on their own veil of various levies, extorting money by various means for themselves, resorting to all kinds of deceit in God’s name, threatening about church membership and even about the salvation of the soul. As it is written: 2 Peter 1-8 There were false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies… bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And in covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; their judgment from long ago is not idle.
The requirement of the mandatory tithe was established only for Israel. Heb. 7:5 The sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment according to the law to take tithes from the people. Heb. 8:13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. With the change of the priesthood there is necessarily a change of law as well, and the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever; therefore Christ is the Mediator of the New Covenant.
Thus, Atamanyuk and such priests preach the heresy that the Old Testament has not been changed. Haven’t they read about this? The Old Covenant was to be fulfilled completely, not just the tithe, or circumcision, or the Sabbath. And who needs it now? After all, these tithe-collectors themselves do not keep it, and these greedy ones have turned the church into their business with a thirst for enrichment, dividing the people into parishioners and members who pay the tithe.
Note: There are a few honest pastors who earn their bread with their own hands and do not look into people’s pockets and do not live with an outstretched hand, extorting money… For example, such as: Pastor Pasechnik Petr works at a production facility; he said: “I do not control who gives and who does not.” Pastor Vronsky Viktor works at a production facility; in his church of 2500 members, the debt for the purchase of the building was paid off long ago; now only voluntary offerings for needs exist.
