The Prophet of the House of Romanov

State secrets are customarily guarded with great care. They are kept in secret underground bunkers, in depositories of impregnable Swiss banks, in hermetic underwater tunnels… In short, far from idle glances. An accidental disclosure of secrets can cause a lot of trouble. Up to the destruction of the state itself.

The Gatchina Palace of the Romanovs was hardly a well-protected, “high-security” facility. However, here, in one of the halls, rested a rather large casket, in which throughout the entire 19th century the “future of the Russian Empire” was kept, as foretold by a certain elder Abel.

The casket was locked and sealed. Around it, on four posts with rings, a thick red silk cord was stretched, barring access. Of course, this was hardly a serious obstacle for a curious person. Yet everyone knew that the casket contained an envelope with the personal seal of Emperor Paul I affixed and his own handwritten inscription: “To be opened by our descendant on the hundredth day of my death,” and, as well-bred people, they humbly awaited the date.

Paul I was killed by officers in his own bedroom on the night of March 24, 1801. On the morning of March 24, 1901, Emperor Nicholas II arrived in Gatchina. He arrived inspired and in good spirits. The Tsar, however, left the Gatchina Palace in quite a different frame of mind. True, Nicholas told no one about the contents of the casket.

They are either eliminated, or “preserved” for a long time in prisons, or, if the sovereign is a civilized person, simply stripped of citizenship and sent to speak the truth to other sovereigns. Actually, this is understandable. Well, but what to do with people who make predictions to rulers? Predictions indicating the exact day of death, and moreover, in a place not at all royal — a toilet.

“In the days of great Catherine, in the Solovetsky Monastery there lived a monk of high life. His name was Abel. He was clairvoyant, and his disposition was of the simplest kind, and whatever was revealed to his spiritual eye, he proclaimed aloud, without caring about consequences. The hour came and he began to prophesy: thus and such a time will pass, and the Tsarina will die — and he even indicated what kind of death. No matter how far Solovki was from Petersburg, Abel’s word soon reached the Secret Chancellery. An inquiry to the abbot, and the abbot, without thinking long, put Abel into a sleigh and sent him to Petersburg; and in Petersburg the conversation was short: they simply seized the prophet and put him into the fortress…”

That is how prophets are treated in their own fatherland. For his predictions, Abel was imprisoned in the Shlisselburg Fortress “under the strictest guard.” True, the essence of the prophecy, unfortunately, did not change. After Abel’s prediction, as they say, came into force — Catherine the Great died on exactly that day and in that very place — the monk was amnestied by Paul I himself.

The Emperor wished to meet with the elder and hear new forecasts from him. Abel described in detail the death of the emperor, and along with it the unenviable future of the Romanov dynasty. Paul I swallowed all this, ordered the elder to give the prediction in written form; thus the sealed envelope in the Gatchina Palace appeared…

Abel was released in peace to the Nevsky Monastery, for a new monastic tonsure. It was there, at his second tonsure, that he received the name Abel.

But the prophet could not sit still in the capital monastery. Already a year after the conversation with Paul, he appears in Moscow, where for money he gives predictions to local aristocrats and rich merchants. Having earned some money, the monk goes to the Valaam Monastery. But even there Abel cannot live peacefully: he again takes up the pen and writes books of predictions, where he reveals the imminent death of the emperor. The monk does not have the habit of writing for the drawer, so the content of the “centuries” of the Russian Nostradamus becomes known to the whole monastery.

After some time, by order of the emperor, Abel is brought in chains to Petersburg and locked up in the Peter and Paul Fortress — “for disturbing the peace of mind of His Majesty.”

Immediately after Paul I’s death, Abel is again released from prison. The liberator of the prophetic monk is now Alexander I. The new emperor obligingly sends the monk away, to the Solovetsky Monastery, without the right to leave the walls of the monastery.

There the monk writes another book, in which he predicts the capture of Moscow by Napoleon in 1812 and the burning of the city. The prediction reaches the tsar, and he orders Abel’s imagination to be quieted in the Solovetsky prison.

But then comes the year 1812, the Russian army surrenders Moscow to the French, and the White-Stone City, just as the monk had predicted, almost burns to the ground. Impressed, Alexander I orders: “Release Abel from the Solovetsky Monastery, give him a passport to all Russian cities and monasteries, supply him with money and clothing.”

Once free, Abel decided not to unnerve the tsar’s family anymore, but went on a journey to the Holy Places: he visited Athos, Jerusalem, Constantinople. Then he settles in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. For some time he behaves quietly, until, after Nicholas I’s accession, he again breaks loose. The new emperor did not like to stand on ceremony, therefore, “for humility,” he sent the monk into confinement in the Suzdal Spaso-Efimov Monastery, where in 1841 Abel presented himself to the Lord.

For 60 years this name did not trouble the House of Romanov, until one fine morning Nicholas II unsealed Paul I’s envelope.

WHAT DID ABEL PREDICT?

About Paul I

“Short will be thy reign, and I, a sinner, see thy fierce end. On the day of Sophronius of Jerusalem from unfaithful servants thou wilt receive a martyr’s death, in thy bedchamber thou wilt be strangled by villains whom thou warmest upon thy royal breast. On Holy Saturday they will bury thee… And these villains, seeking to justify their great sin of regicide, will proclaim thee insane, will revile thy good memory… But the Russian people, with their truthful soul, will understand and value thee, and to thy tomb will bring their sorrows, asking for thy intercession and the softening of unjust and cruel hearts. The number of thy years is like the count of letters.”

The prophecy that the Russian people would value Paul I has not yet come true. If a poll were conducted today about Russians’ attitude to past autocrats, Paul would surely be one of the outsiders.

About Alexander I

“The Frenchman under Him will burn Moscow, but He will take Paris from him and be called the Blessed. But unbearable will become for Him a secret sorrow, and heavy will seem the royal crown; He will replace the feat of royal service with the feat of fasting and prayer. Righteous will He be in the eyes of God: a white monk in the world will He be. I saw over the Russian land the star of a great servant of God. It burns, it blazes. This ascetic will also transform the whole destiny of Alexander…”

According to legend, Alexander I did not die in Taganrog, but turned into the elder Fyodor Kuzmich and went wandering through Rus’.

About Nicholas I

“The beginning of the reign of thy son Nicholas will start with a brawl, a Voltairian revolt. This will be an evil-bringing seed, a pernicious seed for Russia. Were it not for the grace of God covering Russia, then… About a hundred years after that, the House of the Most Holy Theotokos will become impoverished, the Russian Empire will turn into an abomination of desolation.”

About Alexander II

“Thy grandson, Alexander II, predestined as the Tsar‑Liberator. He will fulfill thy plan — will free the peasants, and then beat the Turks and also give freedom to the Slavs from the yoke of the infidel. They will not forgive him his great deeds, they will begin a hunt for him, they will kill him in broad daylight, in the loyal capital, by apostate hands. Like thee, he will seal the feat of his service with royal blood…”

About Alexander III

“The Tsar‑Liberator will be succeeded by the Tsar‑Peacemaker, his son, and thy great‑grandson, Alexander III. Glorious will be his reign. He will besiege the accursed sedition, he will bring peace and order.”

About Nicholas II

“Nicholas II — the holy tsar, like unto the much‑suffering Job. He will have the mind of Christ, long‑suffering, and dove‑like purity. The Scripture testifies of him: Psalms 90, 10 and 20 have revealed to me his entire destiny. He will exchange the royal crown for a crown of thorns, he will be betrayed by his people, as once the Son of God. He will be a redeemer, he will redeem his people — like a bloodless sacrifice. There will be a war, a great war, a world war. Through the air people will fly like birds, under the water they will swim like fish, with stinking brimstone they will begin to exterminate one another. On the eve of victory the royal throne will collapse. Betrayal will grow and multiply. And thy great‑grandson will be betrayed, many of thy descendants will also whiten their garments with the blood of the lamb, a peasant with an axe will madly seize power, but afterwards he himself will weep. Truly an Egyptian punishment will come.”

About a new Time of Troubles in Russia

“Blood and tears will soak the damp earth. Bloody rivers will flow. Brother will rise against brother. And again: fire, sword, invasion of foreigners, and an internal enemy, godless power; a Jew will scourge the Russian land like a scorpion, plunder her holy things, close God’s churches, execute the best Russian people. This is God’s allowance, the Lord’s wrath for Russia’s renunciation of her God’s anointed. And what else will happen! The Angel of the Lord pours out new cups of calamities so that people may come to reason. Two wars, one worse than the other, will occur. A new Batu in the West will raise his hand. The people between fire and flame. But they will not be destroyed from the face of the earth, for the prayer of the martyred tsar is sufficient for them.”
