… You assert, my friend, that you do not hate Jews, that you are merely an “anti-Zionist.” And I say, let truth rise above the highest mountain peaks, let it resound through the green valleys of the Lord’s Earth: when people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews.
Antisemitism, hatred of the Jewish people, has been and remains a stain on the soul of humanity. In this we are in full agreement with each other. So know this as well: an anti-Zionist is inevitably an antisemite, and so it will ever be. Why is this so? You know that Zionism is nothing other than the dream and ideal of the Jewish people to return to life in their own land. The Jewish people, Holy Scripture tells us, once enjoyed a flourishing commonwealth in the Holy Land.
From there they were driven out by a Roman tyrant, the same Romans who cruelly murdered Our Lord. Having left their Homeland, their country reduced to ashes, forced to wander the world, the Jewish people time and again suffered oppression from every tyrant who happened to rule over them. The Black people, my friend, know what it means to endure the oppression of tyranny under rulers not of our own choosing.
Our brothers in Africa ask, beg, DEMAND recognition and realization of our innate right to live in peace under our own sovereignty in our own land.
How simple it should be for anyone who cherishes this inalienable right of all people to understand and support the right of the Jewish people to live in their ancient land of Israel. All people of good will will rejoice at the fulfillment of the Lord’s promise, that His people should return in joy to rebuild their plundered land. That is Zionism, no more and no less.
And what is anti-Zionism? It is the denial to the Jewish people of a fundamental right that we justly demand for the people of Africa and generously accord to all other peoples of the Earth. It is discrimination against Jews, my friend, because they are Jews. In short, it is antisemitism.
The antisemite rejoices at every opportunity to pour out his malice. The times make open expressions of hatred toward Jews unpopular in the West. For this reason the antisemite must constantly seek new forms and new forums for his poison. How he must delight in hiding behind a new mask! He does not hate Jews, he is simply an anti-Zionist. My friend, I do not accuse you of deliberate antisemitism.
I know that you, like me, feel a deep love for truth and justice and an abhorrence of racism, prejudice, and discrimination. But I know that you, like many others, have been misled into thinking that you can be an anti-Zionist and still remain true to those heartfelt principles that you and I share. Let my words sink deep into your soul: when people criticize Zionism, they mean Jews—make no mistake about it.
