The events were investigated on the basis of data on seismic activity in the Dead Sea area, 20 kilometers from Jerusalem. The fact of an earthquake during Christ’s crucifixion is mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 27.
In order to analyze the geological activity of this region, geologist Jefferson Williams from Supersonic Geophysical and his colleagues Markus Schwab and Achim Brauer from the German Research Center for Geosciences studied three rock samples taken from the Ein Gedi beach at the Dead Sea.
Annual sediment layers showed that at least two cases of strong seismic activity affected the earth’s crust – a large earthquake in 31 AD and an earlier one that occurred between 26 and 36 AD.
“The day of the week and the date of the crucifixion are known with a fair degree of accuracy, but the year remains in question,” Williams writes.
The textual data was taken by scientists from the results of an earlier study published in the journal Nature. They boil down to the following:
- All four Gospels testify that the crucifixion took place while Pontius Pilate was procurator of Judea, i.e. between 26-36 AD; that it occurred on a Friday and that Jesus died a few hours before the beginning of the Sabbath (Friday evening).
- From the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke it follows that Jesus died before nightfall on the 14th day of the month of Nisan – just before the start of the Passover meal.
- The data in the Gospel of John differ and, presumably, indicate that Jesus died before nightfall on the 15th day of Nisan.
Thus, the researchers write that taking into account the Jewish calendar, astronomical calculations and geological data, the most likely day is Friday, April 3, 33 AD.
