27. Khabarovsk Prison
We arrived in Khabarovsk at night. Again the same thing: night, a searchlight beam in the face, a narrow corridor of soldiers with dogs, and finally, prison.
Each prison has its own face. The face of Vladivostok Prison was glasses and cabernet. Khabarovsk Prison was distinguished by filth and appalling unsanitary conditions. If in Vladivostok there were a few bedbug-infested cells, and in other cells there were few bugs, then Khabarovsk Prison was one solid bedbug pit. I spent several days in Khabarovsk Prison. Little did I think then that two years later I would have to be here again.
After a few days came another transport. Very few of the prisoners I had travelled with from Vladivostok were in this group. They mostly remained in Khabarovsk Prison and from there were sent to camps in Khabarovsk Krai. I was driven further. How long and where I would be driven there was no one to ask. Again black, sour, dry bread, a can of fish, and ten grams of sugar for the day. I am terribly hungry. Constant fierce hunger and awful weariness in my body. The journey seems endless.
